"Through my work I explore the feelings that come up as I try to figure out who I am and why I am here. In creating my work, there is play that happens during the process. I experience the director, who seeks order and the performer, who plays in the moment. I use photography to understand the anxiety I feel as I transition across social norms, which demands that I simultaneously hide and reveal different aspects of myself depending upon my audience. Rhythm and patterns also express the tension between these selves and balance the work. I am interested in dimensions and the challenge of foreground and background visually competing for attention. I see the illusion of foreground and background as a metaphor for the illusion of absolutes in life, and the gaps and distortions in my compositions refer to the struggle between seeing things as they are and the mind’s tendency to imagine something definite and solid."
